Commitment
Sustainability commitment
BIOND’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond reducing waste and carbon emissions. To support our claims with independent, measurable data, we sought verification through TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK biobased programme.
Internationally Recognised
This internationally recognised certification measures a product’s bio-based carbon content using radiocarbon analysis (EN 16640 / ASTM D6866) and classifies the result under the OK biobased label scheme.
Certification
What is TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK bio‑based certification?
Objective verification of renewable content. The certification uses carbon-14 (radiocarbon) analysis (EN 16640 / ASTM D6866) to distinguish biogenic (recent) carbon from fossil carbon and determine the product’s bio-based carbon content.
What is TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK bio‑based certification?
Updated, clearer scheme. In the updated OK biobased label scheme, products are classified into five classes based on measured bio-based carbon content: Class 1 (20–39%), Class 2 (40–59%), Class 3 (60–79%), Class 4 (80–96%) and Class 5 (97–100%). The updated label displays the certified percentage range and the corresponding class directly on the logo.
What is TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK bio‑based certification?
5‑year validity. Certificates for OK biobased marks are valid for five years, ensuring continued monitoring and credibility.
Awareness
Why independent verification matters?
Growing environmental requirements mean brands and print service providers must back up sustainability claims with evidence. OK biobased certification provides transparent, third-party verification of bio-based carbon content, helping you to:
Why independent verification matters
Build trust. Customers know that an independent laboratory has verified the percentage of renewable raw materials in your films
Why independent verification matters?
Stand out. The updated OK biobased label scheme makes communication simple by showing the certified percentage range and class directly on the logo — clear and comparable across materials.
Why independent verification matters?
Meet ESG goals. Verified biobased content supports environmental, social and governance (ESG) targets and helps achieve carbon-reduction commitments. It also addresses the growing demand for renewable materials in print and visual communications.
Performance
BIOND’s four‑star performance
Our dedication to innovation and renewable materials is recognised through TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK biobased certification scheme. BIOND films are certified with high bio-based carbon content, confirming that a significant share of their carbon comes from renewable sources.Laboratory testing shows:
- BIOND Clear Glossy: 96% biobased carbon content
- BIOND Clear Matte: 95% biobased carbon content
- BIOND Clear Matte Embossed: 94% biobased carbon content
- BIOND White Glossy / Matte: 80% biobased carbon content
These results position BIOND among the leading bio-based film solutions currently available, with independently verified renewable carbon content.
Responsible communication
Indicates only the percentage of renewable (bio‑based) content and does not provide information on overall environmental impact.
Must be used according to the certification body’s guidelines; the product’s bio‑based content cannot be overstated, and the label must not be larger than the product’s name or brand.
How the certification works
Application and product description: A manufacturer submits a detailed description of the product to TÜV AUSTRIA. The carbon-14 content is measured according to EN 16640 / ASTM D6866.
Classification under the updated logo scheme: The measured biobased carbon content determines the product’s classification and the certified result is displayed on the OK biobased label as a percentage range (and class), enabling clear comparisons.
Certificate issuance: TÜV AUSTRIA issues an official certificate confirming compliance with the OK biobased scheme. This certificate grants the right to use the conformity mark on certified products.
Five-year validity and surveillance: Certificates are typically valid for five years, after which re-certification is required. Surveillance checks ensure continued compliance.
