Commitment
Sustainability commitment
BIOND’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond reducing waste and carbon emissions. To guarantee that our films are truly made from renewable resources, we sought independent verification through TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK bio‑based programme.
Internationally Recognised
This internationally recognised certification measures the share of renewable carbon in a product using radiocarbon analysis under EN 16640 / ASTM D6866 and awards a star rating based on the result.
Certification
What is TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK bio‑based certification?
Objective verification of renewable content. The certification uses carbon‑14 analysis to compare young (recently sequestered) carbon with fossil carbon and determine the percentage of renewable raw materials in the product.
What is TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK bio‑based certification?
Simple, transparent rating system. Products are awarded between one and four stars depending on their bio‑based content: 1 star (20–40 % bio‑based), 2 stars (40–60 %), 3 stars (60–80 %) and 4 stars (≥80 %). The top rating is reserved for materials with at least 80 % renewable carbon.
What is TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK bio‑based certification?
5‑year validity. Certificates for OK biobased marks are valid for five years, ensuring continued monitoring and credibility
Awareness
Why independent verification matters?
Growing environmental awareness means brands and print service providers must prove the sustainability of their materials. OK bio‑based certification provides transparent, third‑party evidence of renewable content, helping you to:
Why independent verification matters
Build trust. Customers know that an independent laboratory has verified the percentage of renewable raw materials in your films
Why independent verification matters?
Stand out. The easy‑to‑understand star rating lets you clearly communicate your product’s bio‑based content. A four‑star rating signals that a material contains at least 80 % renewable carbon, differentiating it from conventional alternatives
Why independent verification matters?
Meet ESG goals. Verified bio‑based content supports environmental, social and governance (ESG) targets and helps achieve carbon‑reduction commitments. It also addresses the growing demand for renewable materials in print and visual communications
Performance
BIOND’s four‑star performance
Our dedication to innovation and renewable materials has been rewarded with the highest OK bio‑based rating. Four BIOND films have achieved a four‑star certificate, confirming that at least 80 % of their carbon comes from renewable sources. Laboratory testing shows:
BIOND Clear Glossy: 96 % renewable carbon
BIOND Clear Matte: 95 % renewable carbon
BIOND Clear Matte Embossed: 94 % renewable carbon
BIOND White Glossy / Matte: 80 % renewable carbon
These results place our films at the top of the industry, demonstrating that bio‑based materials can deliver high performance without compromising sustainability
Responsible communication
Indicates only the percentage of renewable (bio‑based) content and does not provide information on overall environmental impact.
Must be used according to the certification body’s guidelines; the product’s bio‑based content cannot be overstated, and the label must not be larger than the product’s name or brand.
How the certification works
Application and product description: A manufacturer submits a detailed description of the product to TÜV AUSTRIA. The carbon‑14 content of the material is measured according to EN 16640 / ASTM D6866 standards.
Star rating assignment: The share of renewable carbon determines the star rating – from 1 star (20 – 40 % bio‑based) to 4 stars (≥80 %).
Certificate issuance: TÜV AUSTRIA issues an official certificate confirming compliance with the OK bio‑based scheme. This certificate grants the right to use the conformity mark on certified products.
Five‑year validity and surveillance: Certificates are valid for five years, after which re‑certification is required. Surveillance checks ensure continued compliance.
